The Henry Fork heads up in the South Mountains and flows east out of Burke County into Catawba County, where it meets the Jacob Fork and forms the South Fork of the Catawba River. The upper sections have been designated as Outstanding Resource Waters by the state. The first 15 miles flow through an area abounding in laurel and rhododendron, making a very scenic run. The stretches below are generally flat and include two dams. Also, sewage is pumped into the river below the dam at Brookford. There are no difficulties that are dangerous, but a constant gradient of 48 feet per mile through the first 2.5 miles will demand great caution. This section consists of many small ledges which are generally followed by pools.
