Jones Lake State Park

Jones Lake State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Have you ever heard of bay lakes? These natural wonders stretch from Florida to New Jersey but are most prominent in the Carolinas. They are usually oval shaped, pointed on a northwest-to-southeast axis, and no deeper than 10 feet.

Theories about the origins of these lakes range from meteors crashing into Earth to gigantic prehistoric whales carving holes in ancient shallow seas with their tails. Bay refers to the preponderance of sweet bay and red bay trees growing around them. A bay lake called Jones Lake is the centerpiece of this quiet state park with a good campground that is simply not used as much as it deserves."
