Holden Mill Circuit

Holden Mill Circuit Professional Review and Guide

"This hike starts at the historic Piper-Cox House of Eno River State Park. Leave the homestead then traverse an aquatic wonderland en route to a former mill, much of which is intact. Your return trip navigates high bluffs above the river, giving a different perspective to the water below, where you will also pass another old homestead, adding more history to this scenic jaunt.

The Eno River is chock-full of history, so it is no surprise that this hike through the river valley is historical as well. Start this adventure at the Piper-Cox House, a preserved homestead established well before the park came to be. The house is really two houses joined together by a breezeway. The older log cabin, where the Piper family lived, was built in the late 1700s. They worked at the mill just down the hill on the Eno River. The clapboard house was added in the 1870s by a man named Wiley Cox, who lived here until 1908. The house was restored to its 1870s appearance. You can tour the grounds of the house any time."
