The Eno River winds its way through Durham County, along a corridor of parklands forming a lush green barrier on the north side of the main populated areas of the city of Durham. Historic mills in varying levels of restoration dot the river. The Eno River State Park is the centerpiece of preservation efforts, more than 2,800 acres of mostly hardwood forest winding along the river. Down the river is the Penny’s Bend Nature Preserve, owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers but managed for rare plant species by the North Carolina Botanical Garden. Habitats: Floodplain hardwood forest with patches of meadow. Key birds: Summer: Broad-winged Hawk; Summer and Scarlet Tanager; Blue Grosbeak; Indigo Bunting. Year-round: Brown-headed Nuthatch.
