Martins Point and Duck

Martins Point and Duck Professional Review and Guide

"All of what is now Southern Shores was once sand dunes and beach covered with dead cedars. Down Jean Guite Creek, however, was a thriving maritime forest. Live oaks big enough for ship timbers were cut, and a network of railway tracks was laid to move the lumber out of the Kitty Hawk Woods to the harbor for transport. Paddling from Duck to Martins Point, it is easy to see the change from beach to marsh to forest. Although the area is now well populated, it is still a pleasant place to paddle.

Martins Point is a gated community with well-appointed homes. Southern Shores contains hundreds of homes and a warren of canals to explore. The homes have not hurt the natural beauty of the area or chased away the many ducks, geese, and swans. White-tailed deer are common, as are snakes and many songbirds. This is a beautiful trip to take in the fall when the trees are changing color."
