Lake Norman Challenge

Lake Norman Challenge Professional Review and Guide

"This ride is enjoyable all year. The back roads of Catawba and Iredell counties are as charming as their names: Grassy Creek Road, Black Snake Road, Molly's Backbone, and Buffalo Shoals road.

The route passes by cornfields, tobacco farms, cow pastures, and their proud homesteads, all welcoming with their fresh paint, sunny perennials, grapevine wreaths, and other country accents. If you like rolling hills, this ride's for you. Terrain: rolling hills with a few short, steep climbs."

Great ride! We never found the exact starting point in Denver either, but there were plenty of places to park for the day. We got lost in Catawba however. At mile 21.4, route 10 makes a sharp left turn - and that's where you have to go straight. The road curves to the right, and that's where you turn left onto Hudson Chapel Road. (If you hit the interstate, you've gone too far along route 10.)

The Lake Norman Challenge was everything it was billed to be. I never did find the described parking/starting spot, but there were many alternatives. The ride was a great mix of winding through the lake, country roads with good pavement but no traffic, miles of farm land, cows, horses, and other unexpected wild life. I only wish this could be one of my regular loops.

Very nice ride. Surprisingly hilly - a real challenge. Besides the hills, I also got a little interval training in by being chased by farm dogs - it happened 4 times. After a while that got to be a drag. The majority of the ride was on rural rodes, but this ride will have increasing car traffic as develpoment continues in the Denver/Lake Norman area. As the ride description indicates, bring your own fluid and "gu" as there are not too many stores/gas stations. I noticed markings on the road for other bike rides ( a heart with a heart and a 60/100 on it) so the area must have good road bike following.
