Uwharrie National Forest — Birkhead Mountain Trail

Uwharrie National Forest — Birkhead Mountain Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Birkhead is a funny wilderness. Signs at trail intersections and occasional blazes are helpful, true, but not in the true spirit of a wilderness. This wilderness also sports stone and mortar fire pits and a plaque commemorating the Christopher Bingham plantation built around 1780.

Subtle though they may be, these traces go against the wilderness ethic of Leave No Trace. Thus, consider the Birkhead a sort of “starter wilderness” for those uncertain of their preparedness for the real thing."

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"This long loop through the heart of the Birkhead Wilderness combines three trails—the Robbins Branch Trail, Hannah’s Creek Trail, and the Birkhead Mountain Trail—to create a challenging loop from the trailhead at the end of Robbins Branch Road. The long trail traverses a series of challenging hills and climbs up to the peak of Birkhead Mountain almost 1,000 feet high. You won’t get spectacular views here as you would in South Mountains State Park and along other trails west of Charlotte, but the trail does follow and cross several nice creeks. The forest in this area is mature and beautiful, and the wilderness designation keeps it from being overused by other recreationists, making it a great place for hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing. The trail and the wilderness it’s in are real hidden gems to the east of Charlotte. The best camping is 20 minutes to the southwest at Arrowhead Campground, just outside the town of Uwharrie."
"This hike makes a loop through the crown jewel of the Uwharrie National Forest— Birkhead Mountains Wilderness. The circuit follows old roads and narrow footpaths from days gone by, passing over high ridges and along babbling streams of the ancient Uwharrie Mountains. One of many highlights along the trail is the historic Bingham Plantation site. On weekends you may see backpackers from greater Charlotte toting their gear on overnight endeavors."
