Uwharrie National Forest — Birkhead Mountain Trail

Uwharrie National Forest — Birkhead Mountain Trail Professional Review and Guide

"The Birkhead is a funny wilderness. Signs at trail intersections and occasional blazes are helpful, true, but not in the true spirit of a wilderness. This wilderness also sports stone and mortar fire pits and a plaque commemorating the Christopher Bingham plantation built around 1780.

Subtle though they may be, these traces go against the wilderness ethic of Leave No Trace. Thus, consider the Birkhead a sort of “starter wilderness” for those uncertain of their preparedness for the real thing."

Winter is a good time for this trip. No leaves on the trees enabled some nice views from ridge tops. Be sure to wear some blaze orange as we saw two groups of hunters coming out as we arrived and heard gunshots in the distance throughout the afternoon. Nice moderate hike. Lots of trees down across the trail made it hard to find at times. Ended up on a detour trail that cut off most of the Hannah's Creek section. Would go back again because it's so close to home.

My three year old son and I did this loop as a two night backpacking trip. It was a great trail and we both had lots of fun.
