Scuppernong River

Scuppernong River Professional Review and Guide

"The Scuppernong River begins north of Lake Phelps and Pettigrew State Park. It flows east past Creswell and swings northeast before going under US 64 at Columbia, where it widens and empties into Bull Bay at Albemarle Sound.

The Scuppernong is typical of rivers beginning near the coast. It starts as a narrow blackwater stream but gains width rapidly in a short run to the sound. Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge headquarters and visitor center is on the river bank in Columbia, where there is an interpretative boardwalk. This guide contains 2 sections of the Scuppernong River from Main Street (Washington Co. 1142) access at Creswell to US 64 access at Columbia."
