South Mountains State Park: High Shoal Falls Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The trail really has everything you can hope for in a hike around Charlotte. You start off on level ground and follow alongside a very beautiful and rocky creek. It’s very picturesque and surrounded by a wonderfully mature and healthy, leafy forest. From here the trail begins to climb gradually and crosses several very well-constructed bridges. Along the way there are ample boulder-filled creek passages that scream “photo op,” and small clearings and a rocky shoreline that have “picnic” and “cloud watching” written all over them. The path really starts to climb once you reach a series of wooden staircases. The good part, besides the physical challenge of the endeavor, is that the staircases wind over a cascading creek and lead to the trail’s highlight: an 80-foot waterfall. From here the trail descends somewhat steeply back down to the gently rolling river and welcomed level ground. It’s really a wonderful and stimulating trail that shouldn’t be missed, but if you have a hard time getting up the steps in a two-story house, then this isn’t the trail for you."
