Wilson Creek — Thorps Creek Trail

Wilson Creek — Thorps Creek Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Yet Wilson Creek, despite being part of the enormously popular Pisgah National Forest, has remained a sleepy escape familiar to a small but enthusiastic minority. Camping here tended to be under a blue tarp thrown up at a roadside pullout. A fancy mountain retreat meant your trailer sat under a tin-roof cover. But that’s about to change.

Caldwell County, facing a decline in manufacturing jobs, is looking to diversify the local economy. Part of that plan is to promote the long-overlooked attributes of Wilson Creek. Wood stairways now take you down to a river once accessible only by scramble, there are now toilets in permanent buildings with doors that lock, and the Mortimer campground has showers—individual showers. There’s even a spiffy visitor center."
