This is one of the most unique hiking destinations near Charlotte, really near Charlotte. Located on Nevin Road off Stateville Avenue, this quaint nature preserve is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and shopping centers. That said, when you are hiking on the trails that weave through the park, you feel like you are in the middle of a forest, far away from the city. There are several highlights along this Explorer Trail, including a scenic covered bridge that leads to Hawk Meadow. However, the two most distinguishing aspects of RibbonWalk Urban Forest are the prized beech trees that tower above the forest canopy and are recognized within Mecklenburg County as Treasure Trees, and the highly active beaver habitat in the southern half of the preserve. These intriguing features with fill adults and children with awe, and make you wonder how such an amazing natural environment can thrive so close to the city center.
