Cane Creek Park Southern Trails

Cane Creek Park: Southern Trails Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Starting from the southern section of Cane Creek Park, this trail departs from the primitive-camping parking lot on the shore of Cane Creek Lake. The route combines two popular trails in the park to create a simple balloon hike. Hike along the shore of Cane Creek Lake before exploring the surrounding forest. An extensive picnic-pavilion development about halfway through the hike makes for a well- positioned resting point."

"Cane Creek Park has a lot to offer. Located to the south of Charlotte in Waxhaw, the park has an extensive day- use area and a large campground that surround a 350-acre prized- bass lake. The property is connected by an extensive trail network. Some of the trails are for hikers only, while others are multiuse trails that are shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. This route explores several different trails in the day- use area. It first follows the Red Trail that weaves through the forest and traces the park’s northern boundary. Then the path veers south to meet the banks of Cane Creek Lake. Once it arrives at the water, the hike travels the Orange Trail to encounter stunning views of Cane Creek Lake. Then the path joins the Yellow Trail to explore several of the park’s recreational facilities, including a boating dock, picnic area, playground, and even a miniature golf course. These amenities are very near the trailhead and can be enjoyed before or after the hike." Read more

"The Red Loop hike starts in the northern portion of Cane Creek Park and is more than 3 miles long but has little elevation. It’s an easy hike through mostly forested terrain. A good hike for older kids who can handle the 3-mile trek, the trail passes a climbing wall station, soccer field, and Cane Creek Lake. Several spur trails lead to nice picnic pavilions, and with all of the recreation opportunities along the route, it’s easy enough to make a whole day of the hike." Read more

This was my first experience mountain biking. It was challenging and yet easy enough that there were no mishaps. The trail doubles as a horse trail but we only shared the trail with two horseback riders. We thourougly enjoyed it. There was camping and plenty of sights to see.

Very easy trail. Take the kids to this one. There a couple of nice jumps and some good fast runs. The park is really nice - swimming lake, camping, etc. It is a county park - $3 per car plus $2 per bike permit.
