Black Mountain Campground

Black Mountain Campground Professional Review and Guide

"Black Mountain Campground has been around a long time. Over the years it has been well maintained. Now it is like an antique, treasured by families that have been returning to Black Mountain through the generations.

They come here to enjoy the relaxed country atmosphere in a forested setting that offers a sampling of the wild country in the shadow of the Black Mountains."

Perfect weekend campsite. Off the beaten path, this clean, pristine site gave us a great oppurtunity to escape for the weekend. There were clean and working toilets and showers for those who wanted them, potable water on tap, and just enough privacy from other campers, but close enough to make new friends to be a great experience. The local area is free from commercial overload, giving it a rustic charm that reminds us of what is great about the slower pace of living. The camp hosts were amazingly accomodating, helpful, and take real ownership of the site. Great for families, couples, friends getting together. And in addition to all this, falling asleep to the sound of rushing water soothes the soul unlike anything else. Just be aware the local town does not offer much in the way of supplies, so bring your own, fire wood is for sale (very cheap) on the way up the mountain, just make sure you have some dry wood if its been raining recently, oh, and great fly fishing within walking distance from the site. Enjoy!
We arrived tuesday afternoon to a almost empty campground and set up two tents under threatening skies. After pitching our tents on the exterior southwestern end of the main loop where the sites are backed up to a dense forest we walked to the entrance to self register. We met and spoke with the hosts who were friendly and informative while telling us about the new shower/restroom facilities -both are on the river loop just as you enter the campground. The main loop is expected new shower facilities next spring. The showers were hot and also handicapped equipped with a shower knob and head accessible for those who need it. Come friday afternoon there wasn`t a vacant site to be had anywhere.Campers were entertained by a group of bluegrass musicians who strummed their instruments as they made their way along the river loop toward the main bath house.Once there they played about 2 hours resting a short while here and there on a somewhat warm evening. I will be coming back to Black Mountain again and recommend you do too.
We stayed at Black Mountain Campground for three nights the week of 6/12/06. Only the campsites along the loop are open, the rest up and down the creek are closed for construction. A few sites opened up on Thursday, but it was a full house by noon on Friday. The host said he had been turning people away all afternoon on Friday. Great place to camp and it looks like they're adding a shower house along with the camp sites that are under construction.
