Spruce-Fir Nature Trail Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This hike is included in this guidebook only because the book features all of the park’s self-guiding nature trails. The nature trails provide great opportunities to learn about the park ecosystem without investing a lot of effort.
However, Spruce-Fir Nature Trail provides little more than a case of depression. Not too many years ago, you could hike a few dozen yards away from the road along this trail and feel as though you were in the middle of a wilderness. It was dark, cool, dense, and mysterious. Today, it’s open, hot, weedy, and depressing. The large fir trees are dead and many of the spruces uprooted. Briers invade the open areas. This is a common scene in spruce-fir forests today."
