Road to Nowhere

Road to Nowhere Professional Review and Guide

"This is the locally famous "Road to Nowhere," a road leading into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park that was begun in 1941 and has yet to be completed. It was intended to connect Bryson City to Fontana Dam via the north shore of Lake Fontana, and would have enabled local citizens to easily visit the old home places and gravesites lost to them upon completion of the dam and designation of the National Park. The project was dropped long ago and many folks are still bitter about it, which explains the sign on your left just before you enter the Park.

It does lead somewhere, however- to several trail heads and a long, dark tunnel that's fun to walk through. The road itself makes a great road bike route. It sees none of the congested traffic typical in the rest of the Park, and the scenery is just as spectacular. Points of interest: Great Smoky Mountains National Park; tunnel; overlook and quiet walkway at milepost 6.2."
