Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Newfound Gap & Clingmans Dome: Great Smoky Mountains National Park Professional Review and Guide

"A 24-mile paved road that climbs from the base of the Great Smoky Mountains to the highest peak, past historic sites, rushing mountain streams, numerous overlooks, and lush forest. When combined, the Newfound Gap and Clingmans Dome roads may well be the most popular scenic drive in North Carolina and Tennessee. With beautiful scenery and numerous historic sites, the roads’ popularity is well deserved. Most people take this drive at some point during their visit to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most-visited national park in the country.

However, such popularity often means heavy traffic. If possible, avoid this drive during summer and on fall weekends. Otherwise, try to get a very early start. Special attractions: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Mountain Farm Museum at Oconaluftee Visitor Center, Newfound Gap, Mingus Mill, Appalachian Trail, Clingmans Dome, hiking, scenic views, and fall colors. This eTrail is a complete description of a scenic drive with a route map and information on the best travel seasons, interesting sites, recreation opportunities, camping locations, and much more."

Clingmans dome is on my top 10 list of favorite places. Whether you hoof it or you're behind a wheel, visit the second highest place in the East. The microclimate is amazing.
