28 / Needmore Professional Review and Guide

"On this route, you'll ride up one side of the Little Tennessee River and back down the other. You can think of Highway 28 as the high road (lots of good views) and Needmore as the low road (alongside the river). Highway 28 is renowned for its twists and curves and numerous short ups and downs. It's a lot of fun and typically hasn't much traffic.

Once on Needmore, things flatten out considerably as much of it is level with the river. In fact, sometimes the wide river and its splashing shoals are only a few feet away. Special note: A four-mile section alongside the Little Tennessee River follows a dirt road. Most of the time this road is very hardpacked and fine for a road bike. However, if the road has recently been graded or it's springtime "mud season," you're in for a rough ride. Points of interest: Little Tennessee River; honor system honey stand; Lost Bridge."
