Tower and Backside Trails — Crowders Mountain State Park

Tower and Backside Trails — Crowders Mountain State Park Professional Review and Guide

"The 1625-foot-high summit of Crowders Mountain is the shorter of the two monadnocks towering over Crowders Mountain State Park. Its summit, topped with a TV and radio tower, can be seen from many miles away.

The park is the largest nearby natural area for hiking, making it extremely popular with the local residents of Kings Mountain, Gastonia, and Charlotte, which sits about 20 miles to the east. Many people visit the park with their dogs."

A fine getaway that's convenient to the Charlotte city limits. The tower at the top spoils the view slightly, but getting past it to the overlooks beyond still makes for a real sense of 'getting away' without the longer drives to the western NC mountains. The Tower Trail is an access road on the trip up; past the tower it narrows to a footpath, and the descent is aided by an extensive set of steps. My 5-year old boy made it up and back with energy to spare!
