Hill Forest Trail

Hill Forest Trail Professional Review and Guide

"A couple of things recommend a hike at Hill Forest, one of seven teaching forests operated by North Carolina State University. The first is its peculiar location on the fringe of the Piedmont’s “snow belt.” “Snow belt” may be a bit of an exaggeration, but on those rare winter days when snow is a possibility in the Triangle, this is where you’re most likely to find it.

Located 2 miles southeast of Rougemont, Hill Forest is on a plateau that is just high enough, topping out around 550 feet, and far enough north that when an indecisive cold rain is pelting Raleigh, it could well be snowing in Hill Forest. Just the spot for northern transplants who miss a good walk in snowy woods."

Very nice pine woods, very diversified. However, this is a restricted access area, property of NC State University. So you need an authorization to walk in these woods. The topo guide doesn't say anything about that, it should be updated. You can call (919)515 7576 (NCSU Forest manager) if you need an authorization. Also, the bridge on the river (see "P" on the guide map) is down, so you have to access the trail from the East.
