Avon from Spence Creek

Avon from Spence Creek Professional Review and Guide

"Avon was once named Kinnakeet, but the post office deemed the name too long and changed it. The area was once covered with thick woods of live oak and cedar. These trees were cut as timber for building beautiful clipper ships in the early 1800s. Once cut, the trees never regrew. “Blowout” areas formed small sand dunes that began to move across the banks.

These dunes covered everything in their path, including the forests. Today, woods are found only in Avon Village and a few other spots. Hunt clubs were built between Avon and Buxton and used quite heavily. Storms and disuse hastened the destruction of these buildings, but the ditches and dikes for the old ponds are still around."
