Mount Mitchell State Park Loop Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"This circuit hike takes you to the highest point east of the Mississippi River—Mount Mitchell. Start at the park office, traversing rare spruce-fir forest and take the historic Old Mitchell Trail to the summit, where prolific panoramas can be had on clear days. Descend along Lower Creek on the also historic Camp Alice Trail.
Mount Mitchell has been determined to be the highest point east of the Mississippi River without doubt. The mountaintop stands at 6,683 feet along the crest of the Black Mountains. However, there was once a great controversy as to the true high point in the East. Some thought it was Grandfather Mountain, an impressive crag to the northeast of Mount Mitchell. Others thought it was Clingmans Dome in the Smokies, yet still others thought it was a peak such as Mount Washington in New England."
