Linville Falls Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Blue Ridge Parkway is an unusual national park. It is linear, stretching 469 miles on the spine of the Southern Appalachians, connecting Great Smoky Mountain and Shenandoah National Parks. When deciding to designate the first park in our southern mountains, government officials just couldn’t decide between Shenandoah and the Smokies, so both were developed.

As a result of this compromise, the scenic road connecting them was built. In the process, officials brought many historic sites and attractive natural features under the Park Service umbrella. One of these outstanding areas is Linville Falls, the crown jewel of Linville Gorge, which many feel to be the most scenic wilderness in the Tar Heel State."

The old mt. mitchel trail is steep at times and not for beginners. But if you are up to the hike then its well worth it. The colors this time of year are great and if your into cold weather this is the place for you.

Highly fun trail for the family. We saw deer up close and the biggest thrill was a long glimpse of a black bear on the ridge. For myself and the kids it was exhilarating. Long day trail.
