Lake Powhatan Campground

Lake Powhatan Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Lake Powhatan is a nicely developed, well-maintained recreation destination. While it is a great destination in its own right, its proximity to Asheville adds the possibilities of visiting tourist destinations in the area, such as the grand Biltmore Estate. Hikers, mountain bikers, and lake enthusiasts will also find much to like about this slice of the Pisgah National Forest. The groomed campground is divided into three loops situated on wooded hills above the lake. The Big John Loop has 21 sites—mostly shaded by a pine, oak, and hickory forest—and it is the highest of them all. Each site has been leveled with landscaping timbers, despite the hilliness. Large and attractive, the sites here provide ample privacy. The Bent Creek Loop has sites 22 through 35. It also has hilly, large camps with rich woods. All the sites here are in great condition. The Lakeside Loop, with sites 36 through 57, is actually well above Lake Powhatan, though a few of the sites overlook the water. The sites here are the shadiest, sheltered by hemlock trees."

This is absolutely a great campground! Very much a family campground! We were there during Smokey the bears birthday, & they had a party for him with cake, crafts, silly songs, puppet making classes, the works! Very nice sandy beach with lifeguard,& roped off. Trout stocked lake.We saw deer, owls, beavers, fantastic! Staff was excellent! We had a problem with some late night partiers 1st night, but the staff put them in line really quick! no problems after that. VERY dog friendly! Bathrooms were clean, recycle bins & garbage cans readily available, campsites were spaced out nicely, fresh paved roads & well marked trails. Staff remembered not only my name, but my wife & kids as well. Well worth your time!! 5 minutes from Blue Ridge Parkway & close to sliding rock and river tubing in Pisgah N.F. OOUTSTANDING!!!! **********

MY FAMILY AND I CAMPED AT LAKE POWHATAN FOR THREE DAYS , WAS SCHEDULED FOR TEN, BUT THE MANAGER AND STAFF THERE WERE SO RUDE AND HUMILIATING TO MY FAMILY WE FELT WE HAD TO LEAVE . THEY MADE US FEEL VERY UNWELCOME AND ARE VERY NON DOG FRIENDLY. i DON'T RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE THAT WANTS TO RELAX AND ENJOY THE JOY OF CAMPING OUT.
