Hawkbill Rock

Hawkbill Rock Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This trail starts near the entrance of the Craggy Gardens picnic area and follows the Mountains to Sea Trail (MST) briefly before veering north on the Snowball Mountain Trail. There is a short but difficult climb to the top of Snowball Mountain followed by a moderate descent down the peak’s narrow ridge.

The highlight of the hike is the dramatic view from Hawkbill Rock. However, you must first overcome a challenging but enjoyable rock scramble in order to access the scenic outcrop."

"This trek starts off the Blue Ridge Parkway within easy striking distance of Asheville and traverses the lesser-trod Snowball Trail to an outcrop known as Hawkbill Rock. Here, you can peer down the Reems Creek watershed down to Weaverville and beyond. Other points of view include the parkway, Craggy Gardens, and even Mount Mitchell. Ambitious hikers can easily extend the trek. This hike takes place in the greater Craggy Gardens area, off the Blue Ridge Parkway, in an area where a multitude of worthwhile hikes can be undertaken. People often take shorter hikes to the viewpoints around Craggy Gardens or to Cascade Falls and Douglas Falls. Fewer people make their way to Hawkbill Rock via the Snowball Trail."
