Birkhead Wilderness Loop Professional Review and Guide
"The Birkhead Mountains Wilderness was established in 1984. Set at the northern end of North Carolina’s oldest mountains—the Uwharries—the area is characterized by long wooded ridges divided by small, clear streams. Though the mountains do not top 1,000 feet at their highest points, they do feature surprisingly hilly terrain in the nearly 5,000-acre preserve. This hike makes a loop through the crown jewel of the Uwharrie National Forest—Birkhead Mountains Wilderness. The circuit follows old roads from days gone by as well as narrow footpaths, passing over high ridges and along babbling streams of the ancient Uwharrie Mountains. On weekends you may see backpackers from the Triad toting their gear on overnight endeavors."
