Ararat River Professional Review and Guide
"The Ararat River begins just above the North Carolina border in Patrick County, Virginia. It flows through Mount Airy and comes within 3 miles of the majestic pinnacle of Pilot Mountain on its way to join the Yadkin River. This eTrail contains 2 sections of the Ararat River from Hamburg Street (Surry Co. 1759) bridge at Mount Airy to Quaker Church Road (Surry Co. 2080) bridge."
--Paul Ferguson, Paddling Eastern North Carolina (Pocosin Press).
3 of us put in at Sheep Farm Rd. (which was difficult to do because of the overgrowth and big rocks around the bridge) but was worth it. I felt like an Ararat River Rat due to it bein' so under rated. There's not many pretty beaches to stop at like the Dan, but the step type rapids were fun and the rapids right before the powerdam bridge where our other vehicle was parked was more like class III to me....the water was up a little due to previous rains the day before tho.
Section 1 Update: Access at the Hamburg Street bridge is more difficult following construction because of guardrails and steep banks. Access at other bridges and nearby roads in this section is difficult.
