This route explores the southern portion of Morrow Mountain State Park. The expedition starts near the park entrance and follows a winding trail through the forest. After crossing a paved park road, this casual stroll transitions into a challenging hike that climbs to the summit of Sugarloaf Mountain and then descends into the valley before navigating the slopes of Morrow Mountain. Morrow Mountain is not only the tallest mountain in the park butat 936 feetit is also the tallest mountain in Stanly County. And while the trail travels to the roof of the state park, most of the views during the spring, summer, and fall will be at least partially obstructed by towering hardwood trees. There is, however, a beautiful observation hut and picnic facility on top of Morrow Mountain, which serves as a scenic reward after a long climb. After embracing the views of the Pee Dee River Valley and Uwharrie National Forest, the trail descends Morrow Mountain and returns to the base of Sugarloaf Mountain. From here the hike travels a peaceful woodland path that returns to the trailhead at the horse trailer parking lot.
