The North Mayo River watershed begins below Fairy Stone State Park, northwest of Martinsville, Virginia. The South Mayo River watershed begins northwest of Stuart, Virginia near the Dan River. The North and South Mayo Rivers flow into North Carolina and join near the state border, about 30 miles north of Greensboro. As the Mayo River flows south, it is impounded by two hydroelectric dams near Mayodan and joins the Dan River just east of Madison. This eTrail contains 4 sections of the Mayo River from Moores Mill Rd. (VA Henry Co. 629) bridge on North Mayo to Dan Valley Road (Rockingham Co. 2177) bridge at Madison.
