Twin Lakes Campground Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is the Big Hole river valley, famous as the land of 10,000 haystacks, where the setting sun casts its glow on endless stretches of ranchland broken only by cottonwoods lining the riverbanks and haystacks set against a glorious mountain backdrop. Early settlers used the term “Big Hole” for any wide mountain valley, and here the name stuck. It’s easy to understand why the people who make this valley their home are willing to put in the long hours to make a living here.

This hearty group would travel the length of the Bitterroot Mountains, across Bannack Pass, and well into Idaho over the next five days. Think about it: this wasn’t just a group of young warriors; there were plenty of women and children, too. They had been traveling for weeks, had just fought one battle, and would walk nearly 150 miles as the crow flies across the steep mountains you see around you to the site of the Birch Creek Affair on August 15. Makes any hiking we do seem pretty simple, doesn’t it?"
