May Creek Campground Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"The peaceful, beautiful landscapes reached from the campground in any direction hardly resemble a war zone. Meadows, wildflowers, dense forest, rivers, and creeks, all bedecked by the backdrop of the Beaverhead and Pioneer Mountains, is home to a vast array of wildlife without showing a hint of discord.
Unfortunately, however, human blood was indeed spilled near here when in 1877 the Nez Perce took up arms rather than agreeing to internment on a reservation located on a fragment of their traditional homeland. Several lives were lost on both sides of the Nez Perce War of 1877, a tragedy that climaxed over four battles, one of which occurred within the Big Hole Basin."
