The Big Mountain Nordic Trails

The Big Mountain Nordic Trails Professional Review and Guide

"The charm of The Big Mountain’s Nordic trails include well-groomed, well-marked routes, challenging terrain, hot chocolate and chow at the trailhead, and a fun innertubing hill nearby. There are also ten ski lifts and excellent telemarking terrain. Although Big Mountain is primarily an alpine ski resort offering over 3,500 skiable acres, cross-country skiers, snowshoers, and backcountry skiers put in mileage on the tracks and on the mountain. Snowshoers not only follow the cross-country ski route but enjoy climbing to the top of the 7,000-foot peak.

Alpine touring skiers also frequently climb the mountain, using climbing skins for the ascent. The view from the summit includes the peaks of Glacier National Park to the east, the Canadian Rockies to the north, the Salish and Cabinet Mountains in the west, and the Swan Range and Whitefish and Flathead Lakes to the south. First-time cross-country skiers should consider skiing on Whitefish’s Glacier Nordic Trails instead of The Big Mountain Nordic Trails; however, early- and late-season snow coverage is much better on the mountain. Surface quality: Machine-groomed daily."
