Upper Madison Valley Trail, Yellowstone National Park

Upper Madison Valley Trail, Yellowstone National Park Professional Review and Guide

"The Upper Madison Valley Trail, although easily accessible, sees few winter visitors. The trail rewards skiers with views into three states and four mountain ranges, and travelers here may see herds of bison and elk.

The 14-mile trail is quite challenging—not because of elevation changes but because route-finding skills are necessary to complete the trail. Additionally, several creek crossings require skiers to remove skis and jump over narrow creeks or, at wider creeks, to remove boots and cross barefoot in 2 feet of ice water. Some spots might have downed trees to use as bridges. An over-the-snow vehicle shuttle is required for the pick-up at trail’s end. Surface quality: Skier-packed."
