Hebegen Lake

Hebegen Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Hebgen Lake, gateway to Yellowstone Park, is fast becoming one of Montana’s prized fishing and recreation areas. Located in Gallatin County, this beautiful Madison River Canyon lake was severely battered during the Montana-Yellowstone earthquake of 1959. Near Hebgen Dam, which separates Quake and Hebgen Lakes, is a Forest Service Visitor Center commemorating the event and explaining the geological activity. It’s well worth a visit when you’re in the area. Since the earthquake, Hebgen Lake has thrived as a prime recreation area.

Hebgen Lake is a rather elongated, 16-mile by 3-mile liver-shaped body of water surrounded by the timbered mountains of the Madison Range to the northeast and the Continental Divide to the southwest. Access is relatively easy because of numerous roads which outline most of the lake, including Horse Butte peninsula on the east, which separates the Madison and Grayling arms of the lake. Browns, rainbow, and mountain whitefish make up the active sport fishery at Hebgen."
