The Tranquil Basin Overlook

The Tranquil Basin Overlook Professional Review and Guide

"This trail provides a rigorous day hike to the top of a high ridgeline, just behind the summit of Mount Furlong. The overlook boasts excellent views of the snowy peaks of the Flathead Range, the lakes of the Tranquil Basin, and the twisted spires that rise in the distance to the north of Marias Pass. From the overlook, it is possible to scramble down to reach the floor of the Tranquil Basin.

This narrow track wastes no time in running uphill as steeply as possible. At first, the trail follows the low ridge directly above Edna Creek. Later, the trail leaves the stream behind and bends around to the east as it climbs high onto a western spur of Mount Furlong. The trail climbs aggressively up the side of this ridge, through a forest of Douglas fir underlain by an abundant growth of thimbleberry bushes."
