The Oil Basin

The Oil Basin Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A long day hike or backpack. Bison paddock to Oil Basin, 7.1 miles (11.4 km) one- way. This trail is a popular one for horse parties and follows a series of grassy valleys along the edge of the open prairie, dipping in and out of the front range of the Rockies. The unmaintained Park Line Trail running from the Oil Basin southward along the park boundary allows a one- way hike of 6.8 miles from the bison paddock.

There is also a trail marked on some park maps linking the loop to the Red Rock Canyon Road. This “trail” does not exist, but the route is easy to follow as it crosses the level grasslands at the foot of Bellevue Hill. There are no designated camping areas along the Oil Basin Trail, and overnight stays are officially discouraged in this area."
