St Mary and Virginia Falls

St. Mary and Virginia Falls Professional Review and Guide

"A half- day hike from Going- to- the- Sun Road to St. Mary Falls, 1.2 miles (2 km) one- way; or from Going- to- the- Sun Road to Virginia Falls, 1.8 miles (3 km) one- way.

This trail is a short and pleasant stroll through the 2015 Reynolds Creek burn to several roaring waterfalls in the valley below Going- to- the- Sun Road. Thanks to the fire, there are now views of the peaks to the south. From the trailhead the trail descends to the valley floor, past well-marked trail junctions to cross the river immediately below St. Mary Falls. The trail then opens up, affording views of Little Chief and Dusty Star Mountains."

The walk was easy enough--both little children and seniors with canes made the trip. There are three sets of falls on the trip. St. Mary is the most photogenic, but Virginia falls are impressive. A good fifty feet before the path opened to the falls, we could feel the "air conditioning." We ate lunch at the lower view point, with the breeze from the falls keeping the bugs away and the air cool. A picnic never tasted so good.

If you want to see some beautiful falls that are easy to get to, then this is your trail. St. Mary's Falls is picturesque with its deep blue water pooling at the bottom. Continuing along the trail will get you to Virginia Falls. This is a straight waterfall that is around 80'-100' in height. You can get right up to the falls and feel the mist of the water in your face.

Lee & Debra, We hiked from the parking lot at Going-to-the-Sun Point to Virginia Falls. The scenery was fantastic. We encountered fresh bear droppings twice along the 6 mile trail and took about a hundred photos. Each of the three waterfalls was impressive in its own way along with the crashing sounds of the cascading streams we walked along. Definitely a memorable adventure.
