One of the most beautiful hikes ever! It's a long tromp for a day hike, but the scenery is so gorgeous you almost forget the blister that sprang up around mile 9.

It was very fine weather. I enjoyed the great view and long walking trail.

Everything in Waterton rates high. After 30 years of packing, it's still one of my favorites. Alderson-Carthew is a beautiful hike in either direction. Most recently my family (wife and seven children) and I went in a day's hike and stayed for two nights. We saw some wildlife, but no big herds this time. Fairly solitary, but it's one of the more actively trafficed trails for experienced packers, so be ready to make new friends. It's also one of the very windy trails in the park. The lakes are crystal clear and a wonderful blue-green color. Often the snowfields fail to melt completely, even over summer and safe places to slide are available. Trail is challenging as you cross the mountain ridges, otherwise its a good straightforward hike. Campsites are nice and secluded with bear poles for safe storage. I have been chased out of these campsites twice in my life by snowstorms in late fall, so be prepared. Last fall we awoke to an inch of snow and a blizzard started so we calmly packed down to the townsite where it was only mist. Hiking out, we drove toward Glacier but were kept out by the heavy snows, so be aware! Hiking back to the Waterton townsite leads to any number of interesting and delightful rewards. If you've never been there, it's well worth the trip. Don't miss the boat ride down Waterton Lake!
