Scalplock Lookout Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is a day hike from Walton Ranger Station to Scalplock Lookout, 4.7 miles one way.

Scalplock Lookout sits high above the townsite of Essex, at the far southern tip of Glacier National Park. After leaving the South Boundary Trail, the Scalplock Lookout Trail climbs steeply, switching back frequently across pine forest and grassy meadows to the summit. The lookout overlooks the south end of the Flathead Range to the west, with Marion Lake nestled unseen in its foothills.

To the south, the snowcapped peaks of the Bob Marshall Wilderness stretch away as far as the eye can see. Mount St. Nicholas, Salvage Mountain, and Church Butte rise to the immediate north, with other peaks of the Lewis Range behind them."

Spectacular wildflowers at the top (July, 2004). Mountain view was also great. The ranger at the top was more than happy to answer questions, but also happy just to let us rest and soak up the view.
