Lake McDonald

Lake McDonald Professional Review and Guide

"A day hike along the northwest shore of Lake McDonald from the Fish Creek Campground to the head of the lake. This relatively obscure and lightly traveled trail follows the roadless northwestern shore of Lake McDonald. Most of the trail is within forest that burned in a hot fire in 2003, with frequent views through the charred snags of the surrounding mountain scenery.

Hikers seeking a shorter trip can start at the south end and visit Rocky Point (1.6 miles round-trip), or start from the north end of the trail and hike to the Lake McDonald backcountry camp (4.4 miles round-trip). After crossing a bridge over Fern Creek, the trail runs through a young forest of lodgepole pine underlain by bear grass."

The snow cleared out of Glacier so late this year, that not many trails were open. This one was a pleasant surprise. It was not too tough, but it also really allowed us to get a feel for the wilderness we couldn''t reach. Lots of views of a beautiful lake, which we camped near, so we felt even more connected.
It was a beautiful forest hike that offers peeks at the lake, but not enough to really satisfy if water is what you are looking for. Nonetheless, you can get lost in your mind as you get lost on the trail and look at the trees and the natural surroundings. For 6.6 miles it can get a little bit long.
