Firebrand Pass–Ole Lake

Firebrand Pass–Ole Lake Professional Review and Guide

"A long day hike or backpack from the Lubec trailhead to Ole Lake, 7.7 miles one way; or from the Lubec Trailhead to Firebrand Pass, 4.8 miles one way.

The Firebrand Pass Trail begins at a false summit near Marias Pass and winds around Calf Robe Mountain to Firebrand Pass before dropping down into the Ole Creek Valley. Ole Lake can also be reached via a longer, less scenic route up the Ole Creek Valley from the Walton Ranger Station or from the Fielding–Coal Creek Trailhead. Firebrand Pass makes a reasonable destination for day hikers, while backpackers will find backcountry campsites at Ole Lake."

This trail was the first trail of our backpacking trip from Lubec Trail head through Firebrand Pass to Ole Lake Backcountry Campsite. It is a beautiful Hike with a variety of scenery. With a large, heavy backpack required for most backpacking excursions, this hike is more on the strenuous side with an 1800 ft. ascent followed by a 2200 ft. descent. My only regret was starting too late in the day. We didn't arrive at Ole Lake until well after dark, but with an earlier start (I would recommend starting before 1pm) this would not have been a problem. This hike is not for those afraid or heights or Peril. Be sure to check the forecast, expecially the estimated wind speed. There were 50-60mph wind gusts that nearly blew my friend and I (each over 210lbs. with 60-90lb. Packs) off the mountain which would have given us a very steep, ~400 foot tumble to our severe injury or worse. Just watch your footing and lean close toward the high side of the mountain. This trail is not for those with unsure footing. Overall, a great 4-day trip. Ole Lake is magnificent and very secluded. After 2 nights at Ole Lake we hiked ~10 quick miles to Ole creek campsite where we stayed 1 night, Then a quick hike to Highway 2 and hitched a ride 11 miles back to our car at mile marker 203. Awesome trip!!!!!!
