Bertha Lake

Bertha Lake Professional Review and Guide

"This is a day hike or short backpack from Waterton townsite to Bertha Lake.

This popular day hike from Waterton townsite follows the shore of Upper Waterton Lake, then climbs a side valley past waterfalls to reach an alpine lake. For travelers who make the climb to the lake, a campground offers opportunities for a short overnighter. The trail begins in a stand of aspens, climbing gradually as it follows the western shore of Upper Waterton Lake. As the trail rises above the lakeshore, there is a mixed forest of lodgepole pine, which thrives in extreme environments."

The trail was scenic and exciting. Getting to the lake was well worth the trek.

The scenery was great. The trail challenging for a beginner/intermediate prairie girl. The lake at the top was a great place to relax and cool off the feet.

We had beautiful weather and beautiful scenery. All the wildlflowers were out and the views were spectacular. Going through a small cave is lots of fun, with a bit of scrambling aided by cables. Near the top of the hike you can stand on top of the huge waterfall that you've been viewing for half the hike. A short bit further you come to your reward - a beautiful alpine lake with a small snowy glacier at one end. Definitely worth the hike!
