Little Spar Lake Trail

Little Spar Lake Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Little Spar Lake sits in a rugged basin within the shadows of 7009-foot Scotchman Peak. The trail to it travels through groves of giant cedars, skirts below cliffs, and blazes across wildlife-rich meadows. This is some of the finest country in the Cabinet Mountains and is worthy of federal wilderness designation. Perhaps after you and your dog trek to this alpine gem you’ll bark to your legislators about fully protecting it.

Little Spar makes for a good backpacking destination if you come during the week. Although certainly not a busy place compared to some of the Idaho Selkirk Lakes, there can be more than a few pups doing the dog paddle here on a warm Saturday in July. On a quiet weeknight, the lake can be the sole property of you and your best friend. There are good camping spots by the outlet, fine swimming, and superb high-country roaming. Remember to be bear-aware."
