Missouri River, Upper - Three Forks to Canyon Ferry Lake

Missouri River, Upper - Three Forks to Canyon Ferry Lake Professional Review and Guide

"The Missouri river has changed dramatically since Lewis and Clark led their expedition to its headwaters just over 200 years ago. Most notably, the river’s flow is interrupted by dams at four locations in its upper reaches for the purposes of irrigation and power. That is not to say that the dams are all bad—especially for those in search of trout. The dams allow for sediment and warmer water from irrigation returns to settle and cool in the depths of reservoirs, especially Canyon Ferry, Hauser and Holter. In fact, the Missouri river owes its healthy trout population and its spring creek qualities to the cooling and filtering that take place in the reservoirs along its length.
