Swan Lake

Swan Lake Professional Review and Guide

"Swan Lake is one of northwestern Montana’s crown jewels. The lake provides a quality fishing experience worthy of acclaim, even though it may not make the list of Montana’s blue-ribbon hot-spots. The Swan Mountains to the northeast and Mission Mountains to the southwest surround this picturesque lake. This is a fairly large lake, about 10 miles long and 1 mile wide, with a surface area of about 2,680 acres. There is a waterfowl refuge, a Forest Service campground, and the lake’s only public boat ramp at the south end.

Scattered around the lake shore are a number of private summer homes and several private resorts. Currently, FWP is trying to establish some cutthroat trout spawning runs in the lake’s tributaries, and so far they have been moderately successful. The lake is home to rainbow and cutthroat trout, kokanee salmon, yellow perch, northern pike, sunfish, and bull trout. The pike have largely wiped out the once resident bass population. Besides these game fish, the lake supports an abundant northern squawfish and peamouth population."
