"Habitats here include large cottonwoods with a variety of understory shrubs, backwater sloughs, oxbows, islands of riparian vegetation, and an active braided reach of the Yellowstone River. Species likely to be sighted here include American White Pelican, Great Blue Heron, Turkey Vulture, American Kestrel, Wild Turkey, Mourning Dove, Eastern Screech Owl, Belted Kingfisher, Northern Flicker, Barn Swallow, Blue Jay, Eastern Bluebird, House Wren, Red-eyed Vireo, and Bullock's Oriole.

General Information: Elk and bison were once abundant on the Great Plains as evidenced in the journals of Lewis and Clark in 1804-1806 and in the writings of Prince Paul of Wurttemberg, who explored the West in 1830. Prince Paul was the first in a long list of nobility—and also the first person with exceptional scientific background- -to visit Montana. Elk are being reintroduced into sections of eastern Montana today by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. This eTrail provides detailed information on birding strategies for this specific location, the specialty birds and other key birds you might see, directions to each birding spot, and helpful general information."
