Morrell Lake and Falls: Morrell Falls National Recreation Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The Morrell Falls National Recreation Trail is among the most popular trails in the Seeley Valley. Morrell Creek, formed in the Grizzly Basin, is located at the base of the Swan Mountain Range adjacent to the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The trail parallels Morrell Creek to Morrell Falls, a series of steep cascades and falls for a total 200-foot drop. The gently rolling terrain leads through an evergreen forest and passes 26-acre Morrell Lake, where Crescent Mountain rises sharply from the eastern shore. From the end of the trail and base of the falls is a stunning view of the 90-foot lower falls, the largest drop"

"Located at the foot of Crescent Mountain in the southern end of the Swan Range, Morrell Falls is one of the most well-known and visited waterfalls in Montana. You’ll often see families making the stroll together. In addition to its easy access to a tall and awesome cascade, Morrell Falls National Recreation Trail also features a couple of small lakes along the way. The trail is wide and level and passes through healthy stands of lodgepole pine. After a short climb to a bench, you advance through mixed forest of larch, fir, spruce, and pine. Summer and fall bring loads of huckleberries to the wooded slopes. Consider coming on weekdays in the early morning or late afternoon to find more solitude at this amazing, yet often crowded location. You might also encounter resident black bears and grizzly bears, so make sure you carry your bear spray." Read more

It is pretty sad to see all the charred landscape on the route to the beautiful falls. The entire trail was once so pretty until the destructive fire last year. However, this is still a great hike and the waterfall is still truly wonderful. The elevation gain is so minimal that it is a very easy hike, great for kids, and a good opportunity to teach them about preventing forest fires, for sure. I saw some new growth amongst the burned areas and that filled me with some relief and hope.
