Hazel and Hub Lakes Trail

Hazel and Hub Lakes Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This is a great hike to two lovely backcountry lakes tucked along the Bitterroot Divide, which separates Idaho from Montana. En route you and your pooch will be treated to a cool forest of old growth cedars, a scenic overlook of crashing Dipper Falls, and a couple of paw-splashing creek crossings. Hazel is the larger and closer lake, but Hub is more scenic and offers better fishing, swimming, and camping.

Follow Ward Creek Trail 262 through a lush cedar forest, marveling at some of the old giants that escaped the Great Fire of 1910, which engulfedthree million surrounding acres. After some easy going the trail begins to climb. Pause for a few minutes to gaze out at Dipper Falls. Perhaps you’ll even see a dipper or two at the base of the 60-foot cataract."

Great hike with a lot to see. The first part of the hike is a nice walk along a stream and through a cedar grove up to Dipper Falls. Then you begin a bit more of a climb up to the first of the two lakes, Hazel. From the trail it is a short but steep drop down to the lake. There is a couple of nice camping spots here but access to the lake is limited. After you climb back up to the trail you can head up the trail a short hike more to the second of the 2 lakes Hub Lake. This lake is a bit more open then Hazel and you will find a lot more shore access here.
