A local’s favorite hike to show off to guests, this walk begins with a Glacier Park Boat Company tour on Saint Mary Lake to the trailhead. The always exciting route features multiple waterfalls, ending with the finale, Virginia Falls. The tour boat ride from Rising Sun Boat Dock aboard Glacier Park Boat Company’s Joy II and Little Chief departs five times a day for an interpretive cruise up the lake to the upper boat dock at Baring Falls. The lakeshore-hugging trail from Baring Falls to Saint Mary Falls provides stunning scenes across Saint Mary Lake to 9,030-foot Citadel Mountain—if you look closely, you can see the white slash of Virginia Falls among the trees of Dusty Star Mountain, the northeast subsummit of Citadel. Almost-a-Dog Mountain at 8,922 feet and Little Chief Mountain at 9,541 feet hem the lake just south of Citadel. The twice-daily ranger-led hike is an excellent choice and departs aboard the tour boat. The ranger’s fascinating details include wildlife, flowers, and geological marvels, such as the red argillite along the trail.
