Otokomi Lake/Rose Creek Trail

Otokomi Lake/Rose Creek Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This gentle climb from the Rising Sun Camp Store cruises between Otokomi Mountain and Goat Mountain, often over July snow patches, before reaching the trout-thick Otokomi Lake and campsites, an area known for its popularity with the grizzly bear community. The trail is sometimes closed due to bear activity, so check with rangers before making hiking plans."

"A day hike or short backpack from Rising Sun Motor Inn to Otokomi Lakee, 5.0 miles (8 km) one- way. This trail passes up Rose Creek along the Lewis thrust fault to a low-elevation cirque lake among blocky, reddish mountains. The trail begins in the wooded St. Mary Valley and climbs around a hillside to the west to enter the Rose Creek drainage.

After hiking along the forested creek valley for 2.5 miles past pools and small waterfalls, you climb onto an open rockslide area from which Goat Mountain is clearly visible across the lake. Just before reaching the lake, the trail passes Otokomi Campground to the left. The trail bends around to the southwest before arriving at the outlet to Otokomi Lake."
