Wild Bill Lake

Wild Bill Lake Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This is a very easy day hike around a charming little lake. The West Fork of Rock Creek Road (FR 71) actually boasts four separate trailheads, all in close proximity. Three vehicle campgrounds are also found in this area, and the lower valley has several residential developments. Since the road starts right in Red Lodge, the lower valley feels like the town’s backyard wilderness.

The West Fork Road is paved for the first 7 miles up to Basin Creek Campground. This is a heavily used area, both for day trips and extended backcountry excursions. Fortunately, the area offers a wide range of trail choices, and visitors tend to disperse. Trails rarely feel crowded."

"Wild Bill Lake is a small but charming threeacre lake in the Custer National Forest at the southern base of Grizzly Peak. The lake sits in the West Fork drainage, nestled into a glacial depression and surrounded by mountains. “Wild Bill” Kurtzer created the lake in 1 902 by building a dam at the outlet. He stocked the lake and rented boats as a commercial venture. This trail circles the perimeter of the lake. There are two fishing docks with benches extending out into the lake. A picnic area sits among the lodgepole pines on the east side of the lake by the parking lot. Wild Bill Lake, regularly stocked with rainbow and brook trout, is a popular children’s fishing area and is wheelchair accessible."
